Welcome to Drew County Arkansas

 Drew County was formed in 1846 and named for Thomas S. Drew who served as Governor of Arkansas from November 1844 to 1849. Monticello is the county seat with a population of around 9,146. Monticello, located 15 miles from the Mississippi Delta in the rolling hills of Southern Arkansas, serves as the retail medical, and cultural center of Southeast Arkansas. Pine Bluff City is just 43 miles north east of Monticello.

Many of the settlers came from Virginia. Spanish, French, U.S., Confederate and Arkansas flags have flown over the territory in Drew County. The Historical Museum, a 14-room mansion is maintained by the county historical society. Sixty of its buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. The economic base for the county is the timber industry, manufacturing of boats, carpets, furniture, and by other service industries. A branch of the University of Arkansas is located in Monticello. Bayou Bartholomew, the longest bayou in the world, runs the length of the eastern side of the county. Hunting and fishing in the area offer several recreational activities. As of the 2000 census, Drew County had a population of 18,723 residents.

 
Lake Monticello

Constructed for future use as a reservoir, the lake currently offers a place to water ski, jet ski and relax only minutes from downtown Monticello. Tucked away within the pine trees in the northwest quadrant of the county, the lake was created with the damming of one of the area's many creeks. Monticello is a city water-supply lake that is rapidly gaining a national reputation as a trophy bass lake. A recent catch was documented as the fourth-biggest largemouth ever caught in the stat e the 1,520-acre lake that is rapidly gaining a reputation as a trophy bass lake.
