Colorado City, Colorado:

Colorado City lies south of Pueblo and north of Trinidad along I-25. Lying along the front range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Colorado City has an elevation of 5800 feet above sea level and a year round population of 2018. The area lies in a valley surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and anchors the southern leg of the Frontier Pathway Scenic Byway. The road, 104 miles along the splendid Sangre de Cristo Mountains, travels through the San Isabel National Forest, by Hardscrabble Canyon and by the 40-acre Lake Isabel, an ideal spot for fishing, hiking and picnicking.

North of Colorado City is Pueblo, the County seat of Pueblo County. Attractions in Pueblo include the beautiful new historic Arkansas River Walk, shopping in the boutiques in the Union Avenue historic district, a visit to the El Pueblo Museum (under expansion construction until 2003), the elegant Rosemount House Museum, the Pueblo City Zoo and Park, the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, fashionable Victorian streets, and the fascinating ethnic neighborhoods where skilled steel workers from around the world lived and raised families for six generations until the steel industry (mostly) collapsed in Pueblo in the early 1980s.

Closer to town, Colorado City provides access to popular hiking areas such as Bartlett, Camp Crockett and the San Carlos trails. Lake Beckworth lies within minutes of town providing an easy retreat for fishing, hiking, and camping. In addition, numerous historical sites lie nearby, including Greenhorn Peak, site of the early wests largest battle when Spanish Governor de Anza battled Comanche Chief Greenhorn, defeating and killing Chief Greenhorn and his four sub-chiefs in 1779.

West of Colorado City, there are many historical monuments along the Frontier Pathway. Popular spots to visit include the Bishop Castle, built in 1969 entirely with a wheel barrel and shovel. The town of Rosita is also along the byway. This old ghost town has buildings dating as far back as the 1800s. Visit the Westcliff School House, built in 1891. Westcliffe is a small mountain community with interesting shops that showcase local artists work. And just east of Westcliff is the 1878 mining town of Silver Cliff, which was built during the boom days of mining in Colorado, but is mostly deserted now.

The climate in Colorado City is that of the High Plains with moderately warm summers and light snows in the winter. With high mountains to the west and south, there is abundant snowfall in the mountains for winter sports and activities.
