California City CA Attractions and Things to Do
Ransburg in 1895, Tungsten and Gold in Aetolia south of us in 1904, and Silver here in Red Mountain in 1919. It's a fascinating and scenic area and people come to camp, hike, off-road, and look for gold. There's another museum in Ransburg and a few others in the surrounding old towns. It's rustic and authentic here - no commercialized stuff here, but if you need to go to the city, Ridgecrest is only 20 minutes from here.
Parking is free and on some days visiting is free.
You take Highway 14 (for most travelers) and keep going to California City, which is a sleepy little town. You will see the sign for the Natural Area, take that for a few miles and you will find the Tortoise Natural Area.
On the weekends there are tour guides. I like the weekdays and to go on my own, It is a beautiful walk and whether you want to walk just a bit or several miles you can. The area is flat.
It is never crowded and in the distance you can see the amazing Sierra Mountains. It is just lovely.
This is a five hundred square mile base. Cameras can only be used when you are told it is okay. This base is also where testing of our most sophisticated aircraft are tested. General Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier flying the Bell X1. I was in awe of the military test pilot program that is a part of this base.
If you get invited don't miss the opportunity to meet the heroes that keep America and the rest of the world safe!
There are planes that are iconic, the Wright Flyer, the 707, the 747, The SR- 71 and so on. However none have had as large of an impact on aviation as Balls 8. Balls 8 (a reference to its 008 tail code) began life as an RB-52B. The RB-52B's were a model B-52's with enhanced reconnaissance capabilities it was turned over to NASA and was modified as a dropship for the revolutionary X-15A.
Flying for over 49 years Balls 8 went on to have an illustrious career and served as a drop ship / mothership for many of other programs. Its history can be seen on its right side with painting of almost every drop. Like a mural it tells a story of success and failure. The humor in the men and women who flew and maintained it is evidenced by many of the markings from its nose art to several other misadventures all chronicled on its side.
