Ward County is located on the High Plains of West Texas with the north bank of the Pecos River forming the southern boundary of the County. The Countycontains the cities of Pyote, Wickett, Thortonville, and Monahans. The climate is warm and arid with an average low of 29 F in January to an average high of 98 F in July. The elevations range from 2,400 to 2,800 feet above sea level and the landscape includes grasslands, drifting sand dunes, and the largest oak forest on Earth. 

The cities that are located nearby include Pyote and Monahans to the north on Interstate 20, which is accessible from Farm-to-Market Road 1927. Monahans is the largest city nearby and offers a variety of annual events including Freedom Fair, AQHA quarter horse show, and a Christmas Parade. The Midland/Odessa area is not far to the east of Monahans and is the major metropolitan area of the High Plains Region.

Other major attractions of the County include the Pecos River which is South of the Section and is one of the last pristine rivers in Texas. The Pecos River serves as the eastern boundary of the most mountainous and arid region of Texas. The Monahans Sandhills State Park east of Monahans contains a total area of 40,000 acres where the oak forest is located and includes 3,840 acres of sand dunes, some of which can reach 70 feet high. Activities located there include camping, hiking, and picnicking along with bird and wildlife watching. Ward County is also close to Fort Stockton, the city that is the beginning of a great Big Bend adventure. Big Bend National Park is one of the largest of Americas national parks that includes massive canyons, vast desert expanses, and the entire Chisos Mountain range.
