LOCATION: Located in Northeast Pennsylvania Monroe County covers 608 square miles and borders Wayne, Pike, Carbon, Luzerne, Lackawanna and Northampton counties in Pennsylvania. Major cities to the north are Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, while Allentown and Bethlehem are located to the South. Both the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas are approximately a two hour drive from the Poconos.
POPULATION: In the 2000 Census, the population of Monroe County stood at 138,687. This represented an increase of 44.9% in the ten years since the 1990 census. In the latest annual figures available (2003-2004), the population of Monroe County increased 2.8%, second only in the state to Pike County. At the end of 2004, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population of Monroe County to be 158,925.
HISTORY: American Indians were the lone inhabitants of the Pocono Mountains until 1659, when Dutch settlers arrived near the Delaware Water Gap. The first permanent residence was built in 1725 in what is now Shawnee-on-Delaware.
