A piece for the true collector. "Abel Pann [Pfeffermann] was born in Latvia in 1883. At an early age he showed interest in drawing and studied in an art school in Odessa (1898). In 1903, he moved to Paris and continued his studies at the Grande Chaumiere, an art academy. One of his teachers was the French painter Adolphe William Bourguereau and another Yehuda Pan, teacher of Chagall. His works aroused much interest, winning him prizes and medals. His works were exhibited together with those of Renoir and Matisse. He contributed to journals of humor and was a member of the 'Salon des Humoristes' in Paris. In the course of time he became well known as a caricaturist in the French capital.

In 1913, he went to Palestine and taught at the Bezalel Academy of Art, Jerusalem, for a year. A few weeks before World War I broke out, he traveled to Paris, intending to return to Palestine shortly afterwards. Because of the war he was prevented from doing so. When it became known that pogroms had taken place in Russia, he drew paintings on that theme, his purpose being to print reproductions of them. In 1916 he painted the series, 'Road of Tears', drawings and lithographs of the Russian pogroms. However, the Russian Minister in Paris was informed of this project and succeeded in convincing the French government of the necessity to forbid the printing. During the war, he painted war subjects, depicting French patriotism and the French war effort.

In 1917, he traveled to the United States where the Union of Museums organized exhibitions of his works in several cities. In 1920, he returned to Palestine to settle permanently and until 1924 taught again at Bezalel. In 1921, he established the first lithographic installation in Palestine, where lithographs of his works were made from a printing machine he had imported from Vienna. In the twenties and thirties he held many exhibitions in Western and Central Europe. His works, including reproductions of them, are widely known all over the world. In the course of World War II, he drew paintings of the Holocaust, but at the same time continued to paint themes of Eretz Yisrael. Art critic David Giladi said of him: 'Had Abel Pann not seen his vocation as being specially Jewish, his name might have been among those inscribed in letters of gold in the pantheon of French art'.

Today, Pann occupies a central place among the masters of Eretz Yisrael. His works increase in value and are much sought after by collectors all over the world. He died in Jerusalem in 1963. There he continued painting his marines and sunsets for which he became world famous."

SHIPPING & HANDLING CHARGES (unframed works only)

Domestic charges within the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii):

For all unframed works, there will be a flat charge of $18 for the FedEx Express Saver 3-day service. There will not be any additional charges for additional pieces in a combined shipment. We will refund* the $18 shipping charge for combined shipments with 3 or more pieces & will also give you a choice of 1 of 5 vintage lithographs (free of charge) for combined shipments with 5 or more pieces.

*Please note that the first piece will be invoiced with a shipping charge (unless five pieces have been won prior to invoicing). A refund will be issued after (i) a fifth piece is won; and (ii) payment is received for all pieces. Additional pieces won can be added to the shipment at no additional cost. Refunds will be issued back to the payment source used (i.e., credit card).

We default the shipping service to the FedEx Express Saver 3-day option. If you wish to select a different service, please let us know so that we can make the necessary adjustment on the invoice (see Payment Options & Settlement Information).

For Alaska, Hawaii, and all International destinations, please contact us for shipping & handling pricing details.

Seller will pay for all insurance costs based on the final auction value.

Shipments will be sent no later than 72 hours from receipt of payment, excluding weekends and holidays.

We receive substantial discounts from FedEx for Express packages, which we in turn pass on to the customer. We do not receive discounts for Ground packages due to the infrequency we use their service. This is the reason that the FedEx 3-day and Home Delivery charges listed above are the same.

INSPECTION INFO

To schedule an appointment to view the asset(s) listed or request additional photos, please contact us at least 24 hours before the auction closes via the "Ask Seller a question" link at the top of each auction listing. For security purposes, an appointment is required.

PAYMENT OPTIONS & SETTLEMENT INFO

All auctions will be invoiced within one business day from the date they close. If a customer has won multiple auctions on the same day, a combined invoice will be issued. All invoices are generated using PayPal.

Payment must be received/postmarked no later than 72 hours following the auction's close. Unless a payment extension is agreed to by seller, any non-payment within the specified time period will be reported and may result in suspension from the site. Buyer is required to pay all shipping/handling costs associated with this auction. Seller is responsible for paying all insurance costs and all items will be insured for the final auction value. Bidding on this item constitutes a legally binding agreement. Bidders are required to conduct any and all due diligence prior to placing a bid.

RETURN POLICY

An item may be returned or exchanged free of charge within 7 days of receipt if it is damaged and/or incorrectly described. A restocking fee of 15% will be applied to all other returns or exchanges, and shipping & handling charges will not be refunded. To promote fairness for both parties, no returns or exchanges will be accepted after the 7 day period. The item being returned must be received by us within 7 days from the date of the return request. Please contact us to obtain a RAN (Return Authorization Number). The returned item must be received by us in the same condition in which it was originally sent unless damages occurred during shipping. Any and all paperwork that accompanied the item must also be returned. Please also include the RAN with the returned item, along with a signed statement specifically outlining the reason(s) for the return.
